Dozens of food related events scheduled at district community libraries through the end of May

Santa Clara County Library is marking Feb. 9th as the kick-off of Focus on Food, a new programming initiative that will be featured in all of the Library District libraries over the next four months.  The District-wide initiative involves all libraries in the district and includes more than 60 exciting programs, demonstrations, workshops, author talks and other food events targeting adults, teens, children and the whole family.
“In the same way that reading is food for the brain, healthy food is also crucial for physical and mental development,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Mike Wasserman, Delegate for the County Library District Joint Powers Authority. “We commend our libraries for providing relevant, stimulating and convenient learning opportunities that could benefit all residents.”

The Focus on Food Program seeks to serve everyone: from those interested in authentic ethnic, traditional fare, to the ones who follow the latest nutritional trends alike.  The program’s line-up of regionally, nationally and internationally recognized guest speakers will include:  TV celebrity Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook; masters in sustainable and edible landscaping;  urban agriculture pioneers; popular food authors and bloggers; plus a wide variety of creative preparers of healthy foods (for adults, teens and children) who will offer talks, demos, and hands-on classes on food-oriented topics. “The Library already provides a wide variety of resources on healthy living,” said Library Joint Powers Authority Board Chair Gilbert Wong. “We are pleased to expand our services with the introduction of the Focus on Food series. Many of the events we have scheduled will be both enriching and enjoyable.”

“We are excited about bringing together such a wide variety of excellent presenters on this universally appealing subject–good food,” County Librarian Nancy Howe said, “We’ve worked to include something of interest for everyone. We are proud to open these great resources and services to everyone who wishes to visit the District Libraries, at no cost to them.” The Libraries will also highlight top-rated collection of materials, including cookbooks, food magazines & DVDs, and a variety of non-fiction books for “foodies” of all ages.   For a complete schedule of the Focus on Food program, visit the Santa Clara County Library online at
