This year, 6,000 children in Santa Clara County are registered for the Sacred Heart Community Service Holiday Program for food and toys, but because of the way that the holidays fall this year, with a late Thanksgiving and midweek Christmas, the agency is scrambling to serve them all. Sacred Heart Community Service has just 2 weeks to prep 3,200 food boxes and collect 18,000 toys.

Next Monday, over 3,000 families will go to Sacred Heart to receive a food box to celebrate Christmas. They are in desperate need of toys for toy distribution on the 20th. Over 1 in 8 children (13%) in Santa Clara County live in under the official poverty level, totaling nearly 60,000 kids. Sixty thousand more live in households that earn less than $45,000 per year.

All these families struggle to keep the heat on, cover extra holiday expenses and find child care when kids are out of school in December. Extra funds just are not available to have a special Christmas meal and presents under the tree.

Sacred Heart fills this gap. While the average family in the US will spend $741 at Christmastime, Sacred Heart sees the families for whom those luxuries are out of reach “We all want our kids to be healthy and happy,” says Poncho Guevara, Executive Director of Sacred Heart. “Christmas gives us the chance to do both; provide a both hearty meal and the gifts that children anticipate all in one day.”

This Christmas, Sacred Heart will provide 3,200 families with a Christmas food box and 6,000 children with toys. Visit to donate, sponsor a food or toy drive or simply take toys to their site Monday-Thursday 9-5, Friday 9-4 and special holiday weekend hours December 14 and 15 from 9-4, . They will be closed Christmas Day and reopen Monday, December 30 for regular services.
