Community Peace Tree

While the tragedies and misfortunes tend to grab the headlines and top the TV news broadcasts, we live in a community of people with enormous generosity and compassion who value and celebrate our diversity.

A good reminder of that stood about 8 feet tall on the edge of Christmas in the Park’s Community Forest in Plaza de Cesar Chavez in Downtown San Jose.  Our Community Peace Tree was adorned with 200 red and blue ornaments carrying messages of peace and gratitude collected from the community by my staff.

Although the Holiday season has ended and Christmas in the Park closed on January 1, the messages can inspire us throughout the year. I’d like to share some of them with you.

“May peace reach each and every branch of humanity for all time. “

“I love the diversity of our community.”

“I like that my community is calm and friendly.”

 “I value my kind neighbors.”

“Our community is very caring.”

“I value that although times are hard, we all still try to help each other out.”

“I value that my community respects each other. “

And as we observed not only the Christmas holiday but also Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas and celebrations of other cultures, this message is particularly fitting:

”I like my community because we celebrate all holidays.”
