The Reaching Out Food Center at the Cathedral of Faith held their annual ‘Celebration of Love’ Monday, December 23 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. During the event, 3,362 grocery carts full of food were distributed, including turkeys, fresh produce, vegetables, bread, and pastries, to needy families. The retail value of the distributed food is well over $900,000.
“This year, we saw a much greater demand in our services,” said Jim Gallagher, Reaching Out’s director. The mostly-volunteer ministry, which operates out of a debt-free, 16,000 square foot distribution center on the Cathedral of Faith campus, provides emergency food and basic life necessities for over 120,000 economically disadvantaged. Over 1,000 volunteers were on hand at the event to provide assistance to food recipients. U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren attended the event, as she has been an outspoken proponent of Reaching Out over their 34-year history.
The Celebration of Love Food Distribution event took about three hours to pull off—and more than 3,500 vouchers were distributed to recipients over the past month. Each family presented their voucher to receive their food. “No one will be turned away,” Gallagher said.
